Chapter 16

ROMAN

Alarms blared from the moment I busted down their armored door. I ignored the noise of it, as I maneuvered through the maze of rooms. I felt her location through the bond, drawing me toward her stronger than any magnet. But the layout of this building was designed to frustrate me.

Guards pulled their rifles on me, but hesitated at the sight of a naked man striding towards them, splattered in blood and holding the decapitated head of one of their scientists.

I hadn’t been able to hold myself back, when I smelled her on him, under his fingernails. This was one of the men who had hurt her. At least the man was proving useful in death. Some of the high tech rooms required a retinal scan to get through.

What I’d seen already had hardened my hearts against the rest of the humans working here. None of these men were innocent. They must have known what goes on behind these walls, and still they continued to work here. They’d chosen wrong.

The guards pulled themselves together enough to aim their rifles, and I smelled the heated metal tang of silver from within the barrels of their rifles.

Not today, humans.

I hurled the scientist’s head high over the guards, and one of them actually panicked, aiming away from me to fire at it. He blasted the head into pieces that splattered everywhere. As shards of skull and brain matter ricocheted around the room, I moved. While the guards were shielding themselves from the gore, I launched at them. Claws erupted through my fingertips, slashing sharply across the thin flesh of one man’s throat. I kicked out, sweeping my leg in an arch, knocking over one guard into another, following him down with a series of blows until my fists were red with the remnants of his face.

A blast in my shoulder diverted my attention. A gaping hole revealed where the bullet went clean through. I couldn’t even feel any residual burning from the silver bullet. Or maybe I didn’t feel the pain of it, because I couldn’t. Not with the rage still coursing through me in a steady beat. Hot enough to burn the rest of me away, until there was nothing left but this haze of all consuming anger.

Controlling me as completely as if I was nothing but a puppet on a string—a puppet with a bottomless urge to kill.

Something in my expression must have tipped the last guard off, because he backed away from me until he was against the wall with nowhere to go. He actually dropped the rifle to the ground, holding his hands up in surrender.

“No, please,” his voice was a needy whine, a fly buzzing in my ear. “I—I’ll give you anything…”

I’d grabbed his throat hard, cutting off the rest of his useless whining. With just a bit more pressure something in his neck cracked. I let him fall, his body crumpled awkwardly on the floor, before realizing that maybe he might have been able to point me in the direction of my mate.
